Hydraulic starters can store energy in the form of hydraulic oil beneath the pressure inside a piston accumulator. The oil is released through a manually operated foot valve & a solenoid-operated start valve.

Through the process, the oil flow takes from the pilot inlet port on the valve block for the valve startup. When energized, this oil flows from the start valve back to the block & then enters through the actuation port.

This pushes the piston backward, which revolves the drive & pinion forward. However, when the pinion has involved the ring gear, the piston reveals a port on the block which permits the oil to pass via the start valve cartridge. The engine gets this oil signal, and the start valve cartridge opens up & allows the oil to enter the starter motor and start circulating. 

Although electrical & air-powered engine-starting systems are great for many kinds of equipment, hydraulic starting also gets a strong niche, specifically in remote or potentially hazardous areas.
